Residential Development at Trevu Road Camborne, Cornwall

In its past glory Trevithick View was the site of the Holman’s No.3 Rock Drill works and for 200 years was a major employer for a community steeped in mining history. When this declined the site fell derelict for 15 years with some buildings on the verge of collapse. The scheme to build 56 new homes for local people on an in-town brown field site was part of a wider government funded regeneration strategy for Camborne, Pool and Redruth.

The historic fabric that served to define the Rock Drill Works, which formed an important part of Camborne’s industrial and economic history, was retained. Where units were entirely new, design principles were adopted in keeping with the industrial heritage of the site.

The regeneration of the site required innovative and extensive engineering efforts in façade retention and the safe restoration of roofs, walls, trusses and gable ends on the verge of collapse. This included detailed consideration of  a Network Rail party wall. Issues such as ceiling and floor heights, parking provision, air circulation and providing level access to dwellings had to be incorporated into the design.

CASE Consultants were appointed by Coastline Housing to act as Civil & Structural engineering consultants for the proposed residential scheme and worked closely with Architects; Lilly Lewarne Practice, Contractors; Mansell Housing Partnership (South West) and Contract Administrators; NRP (SW) Ltd who managed the development of this award winning project.
